As the centenary of Dáil Eirrean approaches, new artwork is to be commissioned celebrating 100 years of parliamentary democracy in Ireland. €64,000 is available, to be spent on paintings overseen by the Royal Irish Academy and the Office of Public Works. The artist will be selected competitively. Proposals are for two paintings of all the female members of Dáil, and Seanad. Objections to the project are being raised because a female-only picture was hung recently to celebrate women’s suffrage, and this seems to be an unequal homage to political contributors in Ireland.
